Alconbury Weald hosts VE Day 80th Anniversary celebration
- 02.05.2025

Midday to 4pm on Saturday 10 May on Watch Office Green. Residents, family, friends and surrounding communities are being invited to attend a 1940’s-themed event to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, which officially marked the end of World War II in Europe.
The event on Saturday 10 May, which is being organised by Alconbury Weald Community Association, will include market stalls selling handmade crafts, gifts, sweets, pet products and a florist, a face painter and traditional lawn games including ring toss and hopscotch.
Raw Theatre Productions will be performing 1940’s sets from 1-2pm and 3-4pm and attendees are encouraged to don 1940’s attire, with the opportunity to win a prize for the best vintage style.
The Watch Office Bar & Kitchen will be serving soft and alcoholic drinks, bar snacks and main meals from the refurbished World War II Watch Office. The venue provides a poignant backdrop for the event, with the Nissan Hut historically serving as a central operations building, briefing aircrew before wartime missions.
Attendees will also be able to enjoy traditional fish and chips with a creative twist as well as burgers and burritos from Pimp My Fish food truck, and an ice cream van will be serving frozen desserts.
“The heritage of the former airfield, which played a significant role during World War II and the Cold War, is reflected throughout the new development. Its past makes it a really special place to celebrate this important anniversary in world history.
“Alconbury Weald Community Association has done a fantastic job organising this event, with something for all ages and interests to enjoy. We hope residents will be joined by family, friends and visitors to celebrate this important milestone and remember those who fought to protect our freedoms.”
Admission is free and there are lots of ways to get to Watch Office Green including walking, cycling and catching the bus (AW1 and 904). If you need to drive, free parking is available in the car park behind the Incubators.
