Community showcases creative talent at annual Scarecrow Festival

Scarecrow Festival

Alconbury Weald residents and visitors explored the development from 19-27 September 2026 to track down and admire over 30 straw-filled creations in the fifth annual Scarecrow Festival.

Households across the development took part, alongside Jemima House Nursery and Ermine Street Church Academy, with entries ranging from animals and superheroes to characters from nursery rhymes and children’s literature. There were even a couple of scarecrow weddings!

This year’s event saw defending champions return, previous contenders take up the mantle, and a wave of first-time participants keen to show off their straw sculpting skills.

Over 100 copies of the trail map, which showed the location of each of the scarecrows, were picked up and people voted on social media, with prizes going to the creations that received the most likes.

This year’s winning entries were The Gruffalo (first), The Wombles (second), Spiderman (third), Paddington (fourth) and the Wicked Witch of The Weald (fifth).

Vouchers were donated by Co-op, Cassie’s Dream Bakes and Kitchen Ten, and a Cineworld voucher and Family Night In hamper box were provided by this year’s sponsor, David Wilson Homes. Winners were given a choice of prize, starting with first place.
