Families explore Storybook Village at Alconbury Weald

Around 80 children enjoyed a world of stories at Storybook Village, the latest event held as part of Alconbury Weald community library’s Summer Reading Challenge.

The event gave young readers the chance to browse a huge selection of books and choose stories to take home, with around 1,000 of over 2,250 books finding new homes. Children also had a chance to get creative between browsing with a bookmark-making activity.

The event welcomed a number of special guests, who came along to see the Storybook Village in action and learn more about the impact it has on local children and families. This included Deputy Lieutenant Dame Polly Courtice DBE LVO DL, High Sheriff Francis Burkitt, Ben Obese-Jecty MP and Mayor of Huntingdon, Cllr Patrick Kadewere.

“We were delighted to welcome so many children and families to Storybook Village and see the excitement as young readers explored the books and chose stories to take home.

“Seeing around 1,000 books find new homes is a fantastic result and shows just how much enthusiasm there is for reading in the community. It was also lovely to see children getting creative with the bookmark-making activity. Events like this are a great way to make reading fun and bring families together during the school holidays.”

The event forms part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children aged four to 11 to discover the joy of reading during the school holidays.

As well as the special events, volunteers at Alconbury Weald community library are available from 10am to midday every Wednesday throughout the summer holidays to listen to children read and award stickers for each book completed.

“The Summer Reading Challenge is proving really popular this year and we’re welcoming more young readers to the community library.

“The Storybook Village was a fantastic event, and it was lovely that the special guests had an opportunity to read with the children and share memories from some of their favourite childhood books.

“Our last event is now fully booked, but our volunteers continue to be on hand on Wednesday mornings to chat with the children, hear highlights from their latest literary adventure and award stickers for each book read.”
