We know that people don’t buy houses - they buy homes which are part of communities. We have therefore been talking to local communities about the sort of homes that would be right for the area, as well as analysing market trends.
Within the Outline Application we have applied for 5000 homes which we hope to deliver over 20 years, containing a housing mix to suit individuals, couples and families at all stages of life. There will be affordable homes, private housing, self build plots and homes to rent. Key concepts such as walkable neighbourhoods, crime prevention and low carbon living have been embedded from the outset.
Homes will be located throughout the 1420 acre site, clustered around local centres containing their own primary school and local facilities. During the Design Enquiry a particular desire for family sized housing was identified and we have reflected this in the predominance of medium to lower densities across the site, with around 10% being apartments. In all cases homes will promote the opportunity for home-working and be connected to superfast broadband.
Our ambition is for the residents of Alconbury Weald to enjoy:
- A living environment – homes set in green spaces with community allotments, woodlands, playing fields and playgrounds
- High quality design – a team of architects working to a cohesive design code
- Low carbon lifestyles – housing with built-in low carbon facilities including rain harvesting, grey water systems and cutting edge waste recycling
- Being at the heart of a community – the delivery will support community development working alongside the surrounding villages
